Using copyright material

Whilst we have all the licences in place, you must tell us of all copies you make of copyright material. Here is a brief explanation of what you MUST do:

Anything written more than 70 years ago is in the public domain, so we can forget that.
Anything we teach by rote, e.g. "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hand" is excluded, unless the teacher is using copied material, such as a photocopy or a home made tape or CD of the tune.
Anything commercially made and printed is excluded - so the original book is exempt, but a copy must be counted and recorded.

Carol sheets copied in previous years and re-used must be counted.
Any copies used by hirers of the hall must be listed. Don't underestimate this.  Our hirers are fortunate we provide the licences for them (this costs us over £500 p.a.) and this is included in their hire charge. But as a hirer you are required by law to tell us about copied poems, music, taped music that has been copied from an original and used on our premises.

Videos taken by brides where the sound track includes music that is still in copyright (not Bach and Wesley, but certainly lots in the newer hymn book like Songs of Fellowship) need a specific licence for the occasion of videoing.

CDs made by us of organ recitals where works less than 70 years old were played.
Images copied by us from published books (e.g. a photo of an event shown in the History of Trinity book used for a PowerPoint presentation)
Images from other published works used to enhance an illustrated talk in church or in the hall.

This sound onerous and awful.  The purpose is to ensure royalties are paid to the copyright holder and all the above examples may have slipped through the next and no royalties paid in the past. It has NO COST IMPLICATIONS for Trinity.  We are licensed and the Performing Rights fees paid.  But a NIL return will provoke investigation.
