Christmas Dinner for all
Economy year
In this year of recession we shared Santa's outfit with two of our volunteers, and limited the paper hats to one per table.
One of best preserved secrets of the outreach to the community of Penarth is the Christmas luncheon. This began in Albert Road Church many years ago and is now held in the spacious upper hall of Trinity Methodist Church.
For many years about 100 people have been coming along to enjoy a traditional Roast Turkey dinner. The volunteers who make this happen are experts in cooking, peeling, shredding, serving, clearing and it all culminates in the biggest washing-up task of the year.
Trinity Methodist Church is grateful for the enthusiastic support from members of the Circuit, from other churches and from non churchgoers who, having had a go once, return year after year to help us. Apart from ordering food, cooking hundreds of roast potatoes, de-lumping the gravy and serving slices of turkey, there is the huge logistical job of bringing people to the festivities.
Inevitably, a high proportion of the guests have limited mobility and on Christmas Day there is no taxi services operating in the area. Someone has to pre-plan the pick-ups, and persuade other volunteers to drive (this year on compacted snow) to every corner of the town and collect people in sufficient time to get them up in the lift and to the banqueting hall before the first plates leave the kitchen.
Meanwhile those cooking have to time their dishes to have them finished, carried to ovens and hot plates on the upper floor, so that when the lunch is served it is piping hot and mouth-watering.
As you can imagine, Christmas pudding and mince pies follow soon afterwards, and tea or coffee for those who still have space left for a drink. But the drinks that are missing are fine French wines - we are Methodists, of course!
